Ryegrass would have to be one of the most widely used turf grasses in the world. Some of its most attractive features are that it is quick to germinate and establish. It also recovers well from heavy wear and tear compared to other species. Ryegrass can be split into two categories, the species that have orginated from agricultural uses and the species that have been specifically bred for turf use.
The agricultural types have a more erect growth habit, with a broader leaf and in most cases won't have dark colouring. Species that have been bred specifically for turf will have dark colouring.
